MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES

1. Member

An individual geoscientist who wishes to apply for registration as a “Member” must meet all of the knowledge requirements set out by the Geoscientists Canada’s, Canadian Geoscience Standards Council, Geoscience Knowledge and Experience Criteria for Professional Registration in Canada (GKE).

The Applicant must at least 48 months of cumulative and progressive geoscience work experience with a minimum of 12 months of Canadian or Canadian equivalent experience. In addition, the applicant must be a legal resident of Canada, have good character, be conversant with the English language and successfully complete the National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE).

2. Member in training (MIT)

An individual who has completed the academic requirements for professional registration but has less than 48 months of cumulative and progressive work experience and may be enrolled as a Member-in-Training (MIT).

The Geoscientists Nova Scotia’s Admissions Board will determine if the applicant is missing specific educational units (EU’s) and prescribe the necessary examination(s) and/or course(s) to qualify for MIT registration.

MITs are required to demonstrate completion of cumulative and progressive geoscience work experience with the preparation of at least 48 months of work experience diaries detailing their geoscience work experience acceptable to the Registrar and the Admissions Board.

In addition, the applicant must be a legal resident of Canada, have good character, be competent with the English language and successfully complete the National Professional Practice Exam.

3. License to practice (LTP)

An individual geoscientist who wishes to apply for registration as a “Member” must meet all of the knowledge requirements set out by the Geoscientists Canada’s, Canadian Geoscience Standards Council, Geoscience Knowledge and Experience Criteria for Professional Registration in Canada (GKE).

The Applicant must at least 48 months of cumulative and progressive geoscience work experience with a minimum of 12 months of Canadian or Canadian equivalent experience. In addition, the applicant must be a legal resident of Canada, have good character, be conversant with the English language and successfully complete the National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE).

An individual geoscientist who is licensed in another similarly constituted Canadian jurisdiction, as a “professional geoscientist” may apply for a no-resident license to practice in Nova Scotia. A LTP is valid for one calendar year and may be renewed for an additional year at the discretion of the Registrar.
