“Province's Cleaner Energy Strategy”
Speaker:  Sandra Farwell
Sandra Farwell is Manager of Renewable Energy with the NS Department of Energy

In the past decade, Nova Scotia has taken significant strides towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. The province’s supply of renewable energy is growing due to new and innovative programs and opportunities that have been established.

Despite progress in this area, Nova Scotians still heavily rely on imported fossil fuels. Until recent years, these fuels have been relatively affordable and easy to obtain. Nova Scotians, like others worldwide, have built the economy and their way of life around having easy access to these fuel sources. However, continued use and reliance on imported fossil fuels is not sustainable.

Nova Scotia will have to act now to address current and future energy challenges.  Fortunately, there are many options for transforming the energy sector that the province can pursue—energy efficiency and conservation, renewable energy for heat, electricity, and fuel, and development of cleaner, local fuels like natural gas.  Additionally, many aspects of these options overlap and can work together to create truly integrated and innovative ways of modernizing Nova Scotia’s energy sector.

The Province’s Cleaner Energy Strategy outlines a vision for turning Nova Scotia’s carbon economy to one that is cleaner, more local, and better for today’s families.  It sets out practical, balanced steps for repatriating Nova Scotia’s energy supplies and charts a realistic course for replacing imported, carbon-intensive, non-renewable fuels with sustainable, local energy sources.

December 2010

Seasons Greetings Everyone,
It is that crazy, wonderful time of year again and I think it is important to let people know how important they are. I want to thank everyone on council and on the various committees and of course David and Sandra for all of their hard work in making this a very productive year.

We have successfully launched a recruitment campaign with students and  other groups which has included presentations to various groups on who we are and the importance and benefits of becoming a member. We have created a new category of membership for students which will give student a chance to gain knowledge of the association and the importance of working towards becoming a profession and should lead to a greater number of MIT’s and eventual members.

Our first Professional Development Seminar in October was a great success- Thank you once again PD committee and all who attended. The PD committee is busy working on the next event to be held early in the New Year.

Our Communications committee is working on a newsletter that will I’m sure do a better job then I in keeping members up to date about what is new and exciting.

Our executive director has been busy organizing a number of standing committees including Environment, Mining and Energy which will be made up of individuals with expertise in each of these disciplines who can offer advice to council on various matters that come up  from time to time.  If you feel you have something to offer to any of these groups please contact David to see if there are still committee positions available.

I do not want to go at too great a length because I know how busy everyone is and that was not my original intent.

I really just want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope that you have a joyous holiday with family and friends.

Chrystal Kennedy, President
